Alarming Levels of Microplastics Discovered in the Human Brain

Plastic pollution may be about to reach a tipping point – but not in a good way. Here are the details.

We’ve all heard about the problems caused by plastic pollution. From massive floating garbage patches in the ocean to tiny particles infiltrating our drinking water – plastic waste is everywhere. 

A Widespread Problem 

Over the years, scientists have uncovered these tiny plastic pieces (typically smaller than 5mm) – called microplastics – in all sorts of places you wouldn’t expect. They’ve found them in our food, our air, in lakes, rivers, and seas, in the placentas of pregnant women – and even in our reproductive organs.

Infiltrating Every Part of Our Bodies

But this latest research has pushed the limits even further. Tiny bits of plastic are now being found in human organs we thought were more protected. This includes some of our most vital organs, like the liver and kidneys.

It’s becoming clear that these particles are not just sitting around; they’re getting into the very fabric of our bodies. And according to the latest research, it turns out our brains are also getting hit hard by plastic pollution. It’s like there’s no escape.

A Brain Weighed Down By Plastic

According to a recent study titled “Bioaccumulation of Microplastics in Decedent Human Brains Assessed by Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry,” posted online at the National Institutes of Health, researchers found that tiny plastic particles are building up in human brain tissue, showing an average of 0.5% plastic by weight in samples taken earlier this year. 

New Frontier of Plastic Pollution

This discovery is raising huge red flags about the extent of plastic contamination in our bodies. 

Scientists found that brain samples contain about 10 to 20 times more plastic than other organs, which suggests that our brains are becoming particularly polluted. 

Is There a Connection?

And this isn’t just a one-off. The amount of plastic in brain samples from this year is about 50% higher than in samples from 2016. Needless to say, as plastic pollution grows in the environment, it’s showing up more and more in our bodies.

Dementia and Plastic

Even more concerning is the potential link between plastic pollution and brain disorders. The studies indicate that the brains of people who have dementia, including Alzheimer’s, contain significantly higher levels of plastic.

This connection is causing some serious worries about how these particles might be affecting our brain health over time.

Bone Deep

Beyond the brain, microplastics are popping up in all sorts of unexpected places. Recent research found these particles in bone marrow samples and in the joints of people who had hip or knee surgeries. 

A Ticking Time Bomb for Reproductive Health

Microplastics have even been detected in testicles and in the penises of men undergoing certain treatments. The impact on reproductive health is another worrying aspect of plastic pollution.

A Silent Crisis 

We don’t know everything about the health risks of microplastics, but we are learning more as time goes on. Early research hints that these particles could contribute to things like oxidative stress and inflammation, which could lead to serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease. 

Reproductive Organs At Risk

Animal studies have linked them to fertility issues, various cancers, and disruptions in the immune systems.

Public Health Risks

The lack of clear governmental standards for microplastics in food and water in the United States is only complicating the situation. Efforts are underway to create standards for measuring and managing microplastics, but for now, the lack of rules means that these tiny contaminants are slipping through the cracks.
